Welcome Future Elevator Apprentices

Welcome Future Elevator Apprentices

Are you someone who wants to work with your hands? Who enjoys complex machinery? Have you always wanted to join a workforce with a strong union and amazing benefits?

Welcome to the International Union of Elevator Constructors. Applying to apprentice with union elevator constructors is an opportunity to work hard, learn while you earn, and enter a stable and reliable career without a college degree or any prior training.

The IUEC represents the most qualified and trained elevator constructors in the world. Members assemble, install, and replace elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walkways, and more.

The IUEC is a small but extremely important building trades union, supporting over 27,000 members. For over a century, elevator constructors have reshaped city skylines and kept our nations moving.

As part of the IUEC training, the National Elevator Industry Educational Program offers incoming apprentices the best education, training, and safety instruction program available in the elevator industry.

We invite you to learn more about the impact the IUEC has made, on the cities and towns we call home, and on the people who are proud to practice their trade as Elevator Constructors.

Application Process

Application Process

To apply, you must:

  • High School diploma, or equivalent (GED) at the time of hire
  • Applicants must be at least 17 years of age to apply, 18 years of age to be registered by the Local Joint Apprenticeship Committee
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Once you meet the requirements, you can go to the Opportunities page on the NEIEP website and select your chosen recruitment.

After submitting your application, there are two steps: the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test (EIAT) and an interview.

Apprenticeship Program

Apprenticeship Program

Apprenticeships will last four to five years and will include 2,000 hours of full-time, supervised work for every calendar year of the apprenticeship, and 100-200 hours of classes.

A first-year apprentice earns 50% of a constructor’s wages, with the apprentice’s pay increasing every year at a fixed rate.

After successfully completing all course curriculum, and accruing 8000 working hours, apprentices are eligible to take the mechanic exam.

Union members can continue their education throughout their careers.

Continuing Education Courses

Continuing Education Courses

IUEC members are the best trained in the industry, and that’s no coincidence.

NEIEP offers union members an entire catalog of continuing education courses that they can complete to improve their skills as they progress.

These courses range from more general courses to more specialized technical courses, with some taking place in the classroom and others online.
